Malandro
About Us

Florianopolis, Brasil • New York City, USA
In the winter of 2005, Malandro was born in Florianopolis, a small island in the south of Brasil. Former high school band-mates Robert and Jonathan traveled south to surf and play music with Gabriel and a special sound soon became evident to everyone within earshot.
Malandro’s sound has been described as a fusion of the lyrical power of Bob Marley, the bluesy hooks of 60’s rock bands like CCR and the Stones, delivered with the live energy and vibe of Ben Harper and Sublime. Whatever the band’s sound recalls for you, the catchy hooks and screaming guitar of Malandro’s music are sure to please any live music audience.
Malandro’s music was chosen for numerous action sports video soundtracks and for several WCT (surfing world circuit) related documentaries. Malandro has performed at many of Manhattan’s top live rock venues (CBGB’s, The Lion’s Den, The Knitting Factory, Kenny’s Castaways), the East End’s The Stephen Talkhouse and has headlined at festivals including “Tube Stock” at Dartmouth (NH), “Springfest” at Franklin & Marshall (PA) and Guild Hall’s 75th Anniversary in East Hampton. NY.
Back in Floripa, Malandro is a household name having appeared on radio, internet and television spots while touring.

          A note on “malandro”:
The Brasilian term "malandro" has no direct English equivalent, but can be loosely translated through example. The classic Malandro is a hero of Brazilian folklore. Celebrated in countless sambas, the Malandro is a mischievous yet loveable trickster, typically depicted in a white linen suit, perfumed scarf, and soft leather hat. Always a marginal figure, the Malandro was driven by a desire to live without working (i.e. playing Rock and Roll for beautiful people), gambling and getting cachaça through winning at snooker or from the women that loved him.
At once a proper noun and adjective, nowadays “malandro” describes both such a person and any action or style that recalls his character. The malandro is slick, scheming yet likable, and always one step ahead. A Malandro shows up immediately after you have bought the beer and departs immediately before it needs to be replenished. Dodging responsibility at every turn without consequence, he sambas through life.
